Increased Military Deployment in Kashmir for Amarnath Yatra Raises Concerns

The BJP-led Indian government has significantly increased troop deployments in occupied Jammu and Kashmir under the pretext of providing security for Hindu pilgrims attending the Amarnath Yatra. Critics argue that the true intention behind this move is to instil fear among the local population.

Over 100 companies of Indian forces’ personnel have been stationed along the Pahalgam route, and an additional 90 companies along the Baltal route in the Kashmir Valley. The 52-day Hindu pilgrimage, commencing on June 29 and ending on August 19, has seen a substantial security buildup.

An Indian police official confirmed the deployment, stating, “The additional companies of Central Armed Forces Personnel have already been deployed at both the routes. Whatsoever security arrangements were in need have already been put in place.”

This recent deployment adds to the already significant paramilitary presence in the region. The Modi government has stationed thousands of paramilitary personnel across the occupied territory, citing the need to bolster security for the Amarnath Yatra. These new forces supplement the tens of thousands of troops already present in Jammu and Kashmir.

The heavy military presence has sparked concerns among locals and human rights observers. Many view these actions as an attempt to intimidate the population rather than a genuine effort to ensure the safety of pilgrims. The perception of militarization in civilian areas contributes to an atmosphere of tension and fear.

The deployment of additional troops is seen by some as part of a broader strategy by the Modi government to exert control over the region. Critics argue that these measures undermine the civil liberties of the Kashmiri people and exacerbate the already volatile situation in the area.

To conclude, while the Indian government justifies the increased troop presence in occupied Jammu and Kashmir as necessary for the security of the Amarnath Yatra, many view it as a tactic to impose fear and control over the local population.
