IIOJK’s Struggling Economy Suffers Amid Unresolved Power Crisis
December 29, 2024The crippling power shortage in IIOJK continues to stifle its fragile economy, jeopardizing businesses, healthcare, and education.
The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I) has raised serious concerns over the ongoing power outages in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). These outages are particularly problematic during the harsh winter, with temperatures plunging below freezing.
Despite earlier claims that the introduction of smart meters would reduce power outages, the region is still facing a significant 600 MW power deficit. This persistent energy shortage has left residents, businesses, and essential services in the dark, figuratively and literally.
The consequences are severe. Power cuts are disrupting critical services such as healthcare and education. Hospitals are struggling to operate vital equipment, putting patients at risk. Schools and universities face closures, further impeding the educational progress of students.
The economic damage is equally troubling. With ongoing power shortages, businesses—especially small enterprises—are unable to function at full capacity. The already fragile economy of IIOJK is now on the verge of collapse, as companies lose valuable work hours and revenue.
KCC&I has urged the authorities to take immediate action to address the crisis. They are calling for additional power procurement and sustainable long-term solutions to ensure a reliable power supply for the region’s residents and businesses.
The government’s inability to solve this energy crisis reflects poorly on their governance and raises questions about their ability to manage the region’s resources effectively. Promises about improved power access have proven to be hollow, leaving Kashmiris to deal with constant disruption and hardship.
As the winter continues, the people of IIOJK face an increasingly dire situation. Without urgent intervention, the power crisis will continue to cause severe economic damage and put lives in jeopardy.
