Hurriyat Leaders Urge UN Intervention to Resolve Kashmir Dispute
August 23, 2024Leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), currently imprisoned in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail, have appealed to the United Nations to play an active role in resolving the Kashmir conflict.
APHC Chairman Masarrat Aalam Butt and senior leader Shabbir Ahmad Shah argue that India’s rigid stance cannot quell the ongoing aspirations of the Kashmiri people. They stress that the Kashmir issue is not merely an internal matter for India but a significant international political and humanitarian concern.
In statements released from Srinagar, the APHC leaders highlighted that the Kashmir dispute is recognized globally, including by the United Nations. They warned that ignoring this issue could jeopardize peace and security in South Asia, urging the UN to intervene proactively.
The leaders pointed out that India initially brought the dispute to the UN, which has since passed numerous resolutions urging a resolution. They criticized India’s inflexible approach, arguing that it fails to address the core issues of the conflict.
According to the APHC, the UN’s historical role in the dispute makes it a suitable mediator. They reminded that India had promised to resolve the issue in line with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
The leaders called for decisive UN action to address the long-standing conflict, emphasizing that international intervention is crucial for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
