General Mujeeb’s Legacy: The Indian Connection and Bangladesh’s Shadow Army
October 30, 2024Lieutenant General Md Mujeebur Rahman of the Bangladesh Army has long been linked with both Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Throughout his service, he has been implicated in financial embezzlement and extrajudicial killings, operating as a key ally of Indian interests.
India’s RAW has seemingly found a willing partner in Rahman, using him as a proxy within the Bangladeshi military. His involvement in the extrajudicial killings of approximately 390 individuals underscores his role as a “gun for hire.” This alignment with RAW has cast a shadow over his tenure, distorting the ideals of the Muktibani he claims to uphold.
In his various military and intelligence roles, Rahman enhanced his skills in extrajudicial activities, evolving into a more “sophisticated” version of the original Muktibani. His allegiance to India is evident in his actions, including the sheltering of 250 RAW operatives, whom he helped escape Bangladesh following events on August 5, 2024. This gesture highlights the deep-rooted connections between RAW and the Bangladeshi Army.
Rahman’s nepotism has been notable; he has cultivated an “army within the army” by promoting individuals with ties to the Awami League. His political maneuvers were bolstered by support from both serving and retired generals, including Gen Ziaul Ahsan and Gen Tabrez. His close relationship with Sheikh Hasina provided a fertile ground for rampant corruption and bribery, as well as unparalleled service to his nation.
Financially, Rahman has made significant investments, including 3 crores in the stock market and numerous properties throughout the country. Allegedly, he facilitated the appointment of Md. Faiz ur Rahman as Director of BGMEA and CEO of JAJ Bhuiyan Group, reportedly receiving 5 crore DBT in return.
His wife has mirrored his actions, reportedly holding over 3.4 crore Tk in cash and multiple properties. Furthermore, Rahman has been involved in possessing unauthorized weapons and tax evasion. Payments for his personal expenses have allegedly been made by the former Prime Minister during foreign trips.
The politicization of the military has peaked under his influence, exemplified by his son’s high-ranking appointment at Nagar. The partnership between Rahman and Sheikh Hasina raises questions about the Prime Minister’s vulnerability to Indian influence. Together, they have redirected Bangladesh’s resources to benefit India, often without public consent.
The departure of both figures to India illustrates India’s adept manipulation of Bangladesh’s internal affairs, prioritizing its own interests at the expense of Bangladesh’s sovereignty. As Bangladesh moves forward, the new government must approach its military leadership with caution, promoting professionalism over political favoritism.
Lieutenant General Md Mujeebur Rahman’s tenure, often referred to as “RAW’s Ready Reserves,” has fostered a troubling loyalty to India. His actions have significantly influenced the dynamics within the Bangladeshi Army, creating a complex legacy that the new leadership must navigate carefully.
