Congress President Criticizes Modi Over Rising Civilian Killings and Political Dysfunction in IIOJK
February 7, 2025Tariq Hameed Karra, president of the Congress chapter in IIOJK, has strongly criticized the Indian government for its failure to control the violence in the region, while also highlighting the dysfunctionality of the political system.
Tariq Hameed Karra, the president of the Congress party in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), has condemned the Indian government for its handling of the recent killings in Kathua and northern IIOJK. In a statement issued in Srinagar, Karra expressed his grave concerns over the increasing civilian deaths, which contradict the Indian government’s claims of restoring peace in the region. He pointed out the government’s inconsistency, stating that while it asserts normalcy has been re-established, incidents of brutality continue to rise.
He criticized the Modi government for its inability to control the worsening situation in IIOJK. Karra argued that the government’s policies towards IIOJK require urgent reevaluation. He called on the Indian authorities to reconsider their approach, as their current strategies have only contributed to further chaos. “If they are serious about restoring normalcy, they need to reflect and change their course,” he emphasized.
Additionally, Karra expressed his disapproval of the dual control system in IIOJK, claiming that it has exacerbated the political turmoil. This system, where both the Lieutenant Governor (LG) and the elected government play significant roles, has led to confusion and instability, according to Karra.
In response to recent remarks from the Chief Minister’s advisor, who revealed that the elected government had been sidelined in crucial decision-making processes, Karra argued that this undermines democratic principles. He said that the exclusion of the Chief Minister from key discussions was a direct insult to the people of IIOJK, who had voted for the elected government.
Karra also questioned the presence of the Lieutenant Governor in official meetings while the elected Chief Minister was excluded. He viewed this as evidence of a divided governance system in IIOJK, with decisions being made by a select few rather than the democratically elected leadership. “This clearly shows that two governments are running IIOJK, and the fate of the elected government is being decided by a few individuals, which is unacceptable,” he concluded.
