Concerns Rise Over Indian Minister’s Threat to Demolish Mosques
September 16, 2024Indian Minister Giriraj Singh’s assertion that three lakh mosques in India are “illegal” has ignited fears of widespread demolitions targeting Muslim places of worship. His statements and endorsement of protests against a disputed mosque in Shimla’s Sanjauli area have raised alarms about a possible agenda to dismantle Islamic symbols across the country.
Singh’s support for protests against an allegedly mosque has heightened concerns that this might be part of a broader effort to challenge Islamic institutions. He commended those protesting against the Waqf Board, which is accused of illegally occupying land, and suggested that similar actions should be taken across India.
The minister’s comments have intensified tensions in Shimla, where clashes have erupted between protesters and police over a mosque’s disputed section. Protesters have called for police verification of Muslims, alleging that illegal immigrants are involved.
In response to the unrest, Himachal Pradesh Ministers Anirudh Singh and Vikramaditya Singh decided to seal off the contested part of the mosque to “preserve communal peace.” Despite this measure, concerns persist that such actions may lead to further targeting and demolition of Muslim places of worship.
The situation has left many worried that Singh’s remarks could fuel a campaign against Islamic sites nationwide, increasing hostility towards Muslim communities. The ongoing unrest reflects broader anxieties about the security of religious minorities in India amid escalating political and social tensions.
