Civil Society in IIOJK Calls for Restoration of Autonomy and Resolution of Kashmir Dispute
June 10, 2024In Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), civil society members have vehemently condemned the Indian government’s ongoing violations of international laws and conventions. During a meeting in Srinagar, prominent figures including Dr. Zubair Ahmed, Muhammad Furhan, Muhammad Iqbal Shaheen, and Syed Haider Hussain demanded the restoration of Articles 370 and 35-A, as well as an immediate resolution to the longstanding Kashmir dispute.
These civil society members emphasized that the Indian government’s actions have stripped the people of Jammu and Kashmir of their fundamental human rights. They specifically criticized the use of stringent laws like the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which they argue are employed to unjustly arrest and detain innocent individuals.
The abrogation of Kashmir’s special status by the Indian government, they asserted, is a blatant violation of international law and United Nations resolutions. The members pointed out that the regime’s policy of granting domicile status to Indian citizens in IIOJK is an attempt to alter the region’s demographic makeup. They also condemned the Modi administration for seizing land and properties belonging to Kashmiris, thereby infringing on international norms and denying the local population their right to self-determination.
The meeting attendees urged the international community to no longer turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Kashmiri people. They called for global intervention to address the Kashmir issue in a manner that aligns with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. The members paid tribute to the victims of the Chotta Bazaar massacre and encouraged the public to show solidarity with the victims’ families and to resist the efforts of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to change the demographic structure of the territory.
Conclusively, the civil society in IIOJK has called for the restoration of Articles 370 and 35-A and a just solution to the Kashmir dispute. They have condemned the Indian government’s actions as violations of international law and human rights, and they urge the global community to take decisive action to support the people of Kashmir.
