Brutal Attack Highlights Increasing Intolerance against Minorities in India
August 22, 2024In a troubling incident in Uttar Pradesh, two Muslim men were violently assaulted by a Hindutva mob after being wrongly accused of transporting illegal meat. The attack occurred in Ghaziabad’s Crossing Republic area.
Ashraf and Aamir, both from Delhi, were transporting meat when their vehicle overturned near ABES College, causing the meat to spill on the road. This attracted the attention of a Hindutva extremist group, including Bajrang Dal members.
Without verifying the situation, the mob accused the men of carrying meat from banned animals. Despite their protests and pleas for help, the men were restrained and brutally beaten. Bystanders joined the violence, and a disturbing video of the assault soon went viral on social media, prompting widespread outrage.
The extremists eventually handed the battered men over to the police. A subsequent investigation, supported by veterinary experts, revealed that the meat was not from banned animals. It was being transported legally from a licensed factory in Mussoorie to Delhi. Nonetheless, the authorities disposed of the meat as a precautionary measure.
In a further twist, Ashraf and Aamir were charged under the Animal Cruelty Act, while a complaint was filed against their attackers. A thorough investigation is demanded.
This violent episode is a huge example of the growing intolerance and hostility towards minorities in India. The incident highlights the dangers of mob justice fueled by extremist Hindutva ideology and the misuse of accusations against vulnerable communities.
