BJP’s Disrespect for Mandate: Congress Calls for Restoration of Statehood in IIOJK
February 21, 2025The denial of statehood to IIOJK has ignited widespread resentment, with Congress leader Tariq Hameed Karra accusing the BJP of disregarding democratic values.
Congress Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu adn Kashmir (IIOJK) president Tariq Hameed Karra has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for undermining the people’s mandate, including the significant support they received in Jammu, under the pretext of statehood restoration.
Addressing a press conference in Jammu, Karra highlighted the overwhelming response to Congress’s campaign across various districts, including Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar. He stressed that statehood remains a primary concern for people from all walks of life.
He expressed frustration over the Modi government’s failure to meet public expectations due to the lack of statehood and political empowerment. The absence of decision-making authority has led to growing dissatisfaction among the people of IIOJK.
Karra further pointed out that certain administrative officers continue to operate with an autocratic mindset rather than embracing democratic governance. In Kishtwar district, citizens are allegedly being threatened with imprisonment under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) simply for peacefully voicing their concerns over essential services like power and water—rights that are fundamental in a democracy.
He criticized the government’s handling of the Chenab region’s demand for free or subsidized electricity, given the presence of numerous power projects in the area. Instead of addressing the grievances of the affected communities who endure hardships and health hazards, the administration has responded with threats of criminal charges and PSA, which raises questions about democratic governance.
Karra also urged a review of the Indus Waters Treaty, emphasizing that the people of IIOJK have suffered disproportionately due to the agreement. He called for special measures to safeguard their interests and ensure equitable access to water resources.
