The Bharatiya Janata Party-led government continues its colonial strategy in IIOJK, seizing the properties of more Kashmiris, fueling fears of economic destabilization and demographic change in the region.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Indian government has once again escalated its anti-Kashmir agenda by attaching the properties of three more Kashmiris in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Minhaj Sinha, the Indian police seized the properties of Najab Din, Mohammad Latif, and Mohammad Bashir in the Kirni and Qasba areas of Poonch district.

The Indian court issued an order imposing strict restrictions on these properties, barring their sale, lease, or any form of transaction without explicit permission from the police or designated authorities under the control of the BJP government. This legal move is part of a broader campaign aimed at weakening the economic and social fabric of the Kashmiri people, who have long sought the right to self-determination as promised by international laws and United Nations resolutions.

This recent seizure of properties reflects the BJP government’s ongoing strategy to economically destabilize the Kashmiri population. Critics argue that the government’s actions are part of a deliberate attempt to diminish the economic standing of Kashmiris and undermine their ability to resist India’s unlawful occupation of the region. The broader goal, according to many observers, is to alter the region’s demographic composition by displacing local Kashmiris and settling non-Kashmiri populations on their land.

Since the revocation of Article 370 and the illegal removal of IIOJK’s special status in August 2019, the Indian government has ramped up efforts to seize properties from Kashmiris under various pretexts. Hundreds of properties have been confiscated, with the stated aim of addressing alleged unlawful land occupations and other bureaucratic justifications. However, these moves are widely seen as part of an effort to disempower the Kashmiri population economically and politically.

The ongoing property seizures raise significant concerns about the violation of international laws and the United Nations resolutions that guarantee the right to self-determination for the Kashmiri people. The Indian government’s actions continue to be condemned by human rights groups, who view these measures as an attempt to further suppress the voices of Kashmiris and perpetuate a colonial occupation in the region.
