Azad Jammu and Kashmir – Azad Kashmir Founding Day is celebrated annually on October 24, commemorating the establishment of the state in 1947. This day symbolizes hope, sacrifice, and the ongoing struggle of the Kashmiri people for self-determination.

The formation of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) as an independent state took place on October 24, 1947, marking the establishment of the first revolutionary government under the leadership of ‘Ghazi-e-Millat’ Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan. Sardar Ibrahim chaired the historic meeting at his residence in Srinagar, where the resolution for Kashmir’s accession to Pakistan was adopted.

The region was liberated from the despotic Dogra rulers by the local population. The structure of the state mirrors that of Pakistan, with its own executive, legislature, and judiciary. AJK operates as a self-governing territory, complete with its own President, Prime Minister, and flag.

The AJK government has defined itself as a “War Council,” with the primary objective of liberating Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Over the past 77 years, significant development has occurred in various sectors within AJK, aided by the Pakistani government’s efforts to improve infrastructure and establish a democratic setup.

The role of the AJK government, alongside diplomatic support from the Government of Pakistan (GoP), has been crucial in the Kashmiris’ freedom struggle, particularly on the international stage. According to international covenants, IIOJK remains a disputed territory, and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions dictate that India cannot alter this status.

The sacrifices made by martyrs and heroes in the Kashmir liberation struggle are honored, with Pakistan steadfast in its support for the Kashmiri right to self-determination. Kashmir is often referred to as the “jugular vein” of Pakistan, influencing the country’s foreign and military policies.

The celebrations included a 21-gun salute in the state capital, with special prayers held in mosques for Pakistan’s prosperity and the early liberation of IIOJK. Flag hoisting and prayer ceremonies took place across all district headquarters, paying tribute to the martyrs of the Kashmir struggle.

Various events featured addresses by AJK President, Prime Minister, Chief Secretary, members of the AJK Legislative Assembly, and other Kashmiri leaders, reflecting on the significance of the day and honoring the legacy of those who fought for freedom.
