Asaduddin Owaisi Accuses Modi Government of Attempting to Seize Waqf Properties Through Amendments
August 7, 2024All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi has strongly criticized the Modi government for proposing amendments to the Waqf Act, accusing it of trying to seize Waqf properties from Muslims. Owaisi condemned the government’s efforts to dilute the autonomy of the Waqf Board and shift the power to resolve disputes from the judiciary to the political executive. He argued that these changes would lead to chaos, erode the Waqf Board’s independence, and enable the government to exert greater control over Waqf properties.
Owaisi also voiced concerns that the amendments would open the door for encroachers to falsely claim Waqf properties. He accused the BJP and RSS of pursuing a Hindutva agenda aimed at undermining the Waqf Board and Muslim religious practices. AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan echoed these sentiments, asserting that the proposed amendments are part of a broader strategy to target and disrupt the Muslim community in India.
The government is currently discussing 40 amendments to the Waqf Act, which include mandatory verification of property claims and alterations to the structure of the Central and State Waqf Board Councils. The proposed bill also introduces new verification procedures for disputed lands claimed by state Waqf Boards.
