APHC Urges Global Action for Political Detainees in IIOJK
August 21, 2024The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has called on the United Nations and international human rights organizations to pressure India to release all Kashmiri political detainees in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). This includes APHC leaders, youth, and activists held in harsh conditions.
In a statement from Srinagar, APHC spokesman Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas highlighted the inhumane treatment of these detainees. He asserted that India’s attempts to suppress Kashmiri freedom sentiments through illegal detentions and harassment are unacceptable.
The APHC is particularly concerned about several individuals who have endured prolonged imprisonment. These include Dr. Muhammad Shafi Shariati, Dr. Mohammad Qasim Fakhtoo, and Ghulam Qadir Butt, among others, who have spent decades in jail.
The spokesman also pointed out the plight of thousands of APHC leaders, activists, and youth. High-profile detainees include APHC chairman Masarrat Aalam Butt, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, and Muhammad Yasin Malik. They, along with others such as Aasiya Andrabi and Ayaz Akbar, face severe conditions and physical abuse.
Despite ongoing detention and torture, the morale of the detained leaders and activists remains strong. They are committed to the Kashmir cause and are prepared to endure hardship for their struggle.
The APHC has formally appealed to UN Secretary General António Guterres, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other human rights organizations. Their goal is to secure the release of the Kashmiri detainees and address the Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN resolutions.
This appeal highlights the urgent need for global intervention to end the suffering of Kashmiri political detainees. The international community’s role is crucial in advocating for human rights and justice in the region.
