APHC Demands for UN Intervention in Kashmir Dispute
May 22, 2024The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has called upon the United Nations and the international community to urgently intervene in the longstanding Kashmir dispute, advocating for a resolution in line with UN resolutions. This appeal was made by APHC spokesman Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas following a meeting of APHC leaders in Srinagar.
In a statement, Minhas urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take decisive steps to address the Kashmir issue and uphold the right to self-determination for the Kashmiri people, as guaranteed by UN resolutions. The APHC emphasized the critical need for the UN to confront the Indian government’s harsh policies and military presence, which have severely impacted the political, social, and economic lives of Kashmiris.
The APHC’s appeal highlighted the harmful effects of the ongoing military siege in the region, stressing the urgency of resolving the Kashmir dispute to ensure peace and justice. The participants underscored the necessity for the UN to pressure India into withdrawing its troops from the region and repealing oppressive laws, including the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Public Safety Act (PSA), and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The APHC leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continuing their political struggle until their demands are met. They called attention to the increasing number of military bunkers in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir, as well as the widespread crackdown on leaders, activists, social media users, and civil society members. These actions, they argued, are aimed at suppressing dissent and enforcing silence in the region.
Furthermore, the APHC urged the United Nations to compel India to abandon its military and police tactics in favor of a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute. The conference stressed the historical context of the issue, urging the UN to facilitate a resolution that respects the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
The meeting highlighted the international responsibility to intervene and ensure that the Kashmiri people’s rights are protected. The APHC leaders highlighted the severe human rights violations occurring under the current conditions and called for immediate global action to address these injustices.
The Hurriyat Conference’s plea for UN intervention reflects the severe frustrations and aspirations of the Kashmiri people for self-determination and justice. As the situation in Kashmir remains tense, the APHC’s call to the international community serves as a reminder of the urgent need for a peaceful and fair resolution to the longstanding conflict.
