Allegations of Resource Exploitation and Human Rights Abuses Escalate in IIOJK

In a recent development on January 3rd, 2024, a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was signed between Ratle Hydro Electric Power Corporation Limited (RHPCL) and Rajasthan Urja Vikas & IT Services Limited in Jaipur. The agreement, witnessed by senior officers, centers around the procurement of power generated from the 850 MW Ratle Hydroelectric Project in Kishtwar, Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), to be supplied to Rajasthan for 40 years.

However, the agreement has stirred controversy, accusing India of depriving the people of IIOJK of essential resources. Critics argue that India’s actions seem to be a form of collective punishment, exacerbating the already chronic power deficiency in the region.

This event is part of a larger pattern where India is alleged to be exploiting the natural resources of occupied Kashmir, leading to a growing sense of betrayal among the local population. The persistent depletion of resources has fueled discontent and resentment among the people of IIOJK, who feel increasingly marginalized.

Shocking videos depict the ruthless torture of civilians by the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, including methods such as drizzling chili powder onto the backs and employing brutal thrashings with iron rods. Tragically, lives have been lost, with individuals like Safeer, Mohammad Showkat, and Shabir Ahmad succumbing to the brutality. Others remain in critical condition in intensive care.

The videos sparked protests in Srinagar, prompting authorities to quell dissent by shutting down the internet. The fallout was swift, resulting in the removal of three senior officers, including the 16 corps commander, for failing to control insurgency and concealing human rights violations.
