Agha Ruhullah Mehdi’s strong remarks underscore the importance of upholding the National Conference’s promises on Article 370, or risk being seen as betraying the people of IIOJK.

Agha Ruhullah Mehdi, a Member of Parliament from the National Conference (NC), has issued a stern warning to his party about the need to stay true to its ideological commitments regarding the restoration of Article 370. Speaking to the media in Srinagar, Mehdi emphasized that the party’s integrity was at stake, warning that failure to deliver on its promises would be seen as a betrayal of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Mehdi made it clear that standing alone on the issue of Article 370 should not be a concern, as long as the party remained true to its core principles. He highlighted that the people of IIOJK have a long political memory and would not forget unfulfilled promises. He stated, “Kashmiris have long political memory and won’t forget unkept promises; I will always oppose systems that suppress people’s rights.” Mehdi’s comments point to the deep connection between the National Conference and the people of IIOJK, stressing that the party’s credibility was tied to its stance on the region’s constitutional rights.

The NC leader also warned that if the party failed to honor its commitments, it would face consequences in the future. Drawing a comparison to the way Mehbooba Mufti’s promises are remembered, he said, “Just like Mehbooba’s words are remembered today, we will also be questioned in the future.” This statement highlighted the lasting impact of political promises and the importance of staying true to one’s word in the eyes of the people.

Further discussing the core principles of the National Conference, Mehdi stated that the fight for Kashmir’s identity was not just a slogan but a deeply rooted struggle for the region’s constitutional rights. He viewed the abrogation of Article 370 as more than a political maneuver; he considered it a direct assault on the rights of the people of IIOJK. This, he stressed, was an issue that transcended politics and was fundamental to the region’s identity and autonomy.

Mehdi concluded with a clear warning to the National Conference: “NC must stick to its ideological commitments throughout its five-year term, or else people will see it as a betrayal.” This underscores the high stakes for the party in upholding its promises regarding IIOJK’s constitutional status, with its future credibility and relationship with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir at risk.
