In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), few could have foreseen that a young man of just 22 years would redefine guerrilla warfare, openly challenging the vast Indian military presence. Burhan Wani, born on September 19, 1994, in Dadsara village of Pulwama’s Tral area, was the son of school principal Muhammad Muzaffar Wani. He grew up alongside his two younger brothers and a sister. Like many young Kashmiris, Burhan personally endured the harsh realities of military crackdowns, arbitrary detentions, and other atrocities by the occupational forces, which fueled his resentment towards the oppressive authorities.

At the tender age of 15, Burhan fled his home in search of a weapon. His actions soon made him a high-profile target, with the authorities placing a Rs 10 lakh bounty on his head and eliminating many of his associates. Despite this, Burhan’s influence endured, inspiring many to confront the Indian military’s presence in IIOJK.

A pioneer in using social media for resistance, Burhan Wani recognized its potential as a tool for advocacy and mobilization. At a time when social media was revolutionizing global communication, he utilized platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to spread his message, gather support, and update followers on the resistance movement in Kashmir. His insightful posts and videos transformed him into a virtual commander, motivating a generation of Kashmiri youth to join the fight against the illegal occupation of their homeland.

Burhan’s social media outreach extended his influence far beyond Kashmir, reaching a global audience and bypassing traditional media censorship. According to political experts, his impact went beyond his role as a resistance leader; he gave purpose to thousands of young Kashmiris who felt oppressed and marginalized. His leadership and actions have shaped the ongoing struggle for Kashmiri freedom, inspiring many to seek justice for the oppressed.

Even after his martyrdom on July 8, 2016, during a fierce encounter with Indian forces in the Kokernag area, Burhan Wani’s legacy continues to inspire. His death triggered weeks of unrest in Kashmir, as the region erupted in protests and clashes. Today, Burhan Wani remains an icon of Kashmiri resistance, symbolizing the ongoing battle for freedom against oppression.

The “Burhan effect” endures, representing the persistent political discontent among Kashmiris and their desire to break free from New Delhi’s oppressive rule. Burhan Wani’s life and legacy have left an indelible mark on the resistance movement in Kashmir, continuing to motivate young Kashmiris to reclaim their identity and fight for their rights amidst the ongoing conflict.
