BJP Behind Escalating Drug Crisis in IIOJK: AAP Leader
March 8, 2025AAP MLA Meraj Malik has called out the BJP government for worsening the drug crisis in IIOJK, demanding urgent measures to protect the youth and tackle the growing issue.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Doda, Meraj Malik, has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exacerbating the drug problem in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Speaking during the budget session of the Kashmir Assembly, Malik criticized the BJP government for its focus on generating revenue by expanding liquor shops, which he argued is contributing to the region’s escalating drug crisis.
Malik stressed that the BJP administration has failed to consider the health and future of the people, particularly the youth. He called for urgent and comprehensive action to address the issue, beginning with a complete ban on alcohol and stricter enforcement against drug trafficking. The MLA also made a direct appeal to the Speaker of the Assembly, urging the implementation of policies to curb both alcohol consumption and the distribution of illegal drugs.
Malik further pointed out that under the leadership of the Lieutenant Governor, liquor contracts had become more prevalent, exacerbating the region’s addiction problems. He emphasized that the expansion of liquor outlets was only worsening the situation, undermining efforts to safeguard the health of the population and offering a stark contrast to the growing need for stronger drug control measures.
In addition to discussing the drug crisis, Meraj Malik used the session to raise concerns about the compensation and treatment of elected representatives. He proposed a salary increase for MLAs, suggesting that their wages be raised to Rs 3 lakh per month, in recognition of their hard work for the public. Furthermore, Malik demanded the regularization of temporary employees and an increase in the wages of daily wage workers, highlighting the need for fair treatment and compensation for all those serving the community.
The AAP leader’s remarks reflect ongoing frustration over the policies and governance of the BJP in IIOJK, with a particular focus on the worsening social and economic issues facing the region. Malik’s calls for action against the growing drug crisis and the improvement of worker conditions echo the increasing demands for better governance and a more sustainable approach to addressing the challenges faced by the people of IIOJK.
