Mehbooba Mufti Slams 28% GST Hike, Calls It a Blow to Kashmiri Artisans
December 21, 2024“Increasing the GST by 28% on textiles in Kashmir will lead to the destruction of our art,” she said.
Srinagar, IIOJK: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has strongly opposed the proposed 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) increase on textiles, cautioning that the move could irreparably damage Kashmir’s rich artistic heritage, particularly its iconic shawls and handicrafts.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mehbooba emphasized that the proposed GST hike would devastate industries that have been lifelines for the region. “Increasing the GST by 28% on textiles in Kashmir will lead to the destruction of our art,” she said. Highlighting the unique role these crafts play in the region’s economy, she accused BJP and NC authorities of trying to undermine them under the guise of development claims.
Mehbooba also called on the Chief Minister of the occupied territory to take immediate action to address the people’s concerns, noting that the textile and handicraft sectors have sustained Jammu and Kashmir through challenging times.
Her remarks come as opposition to the GST hike gains momentum, with many warning of the detrimental impact on Kashmir’s traditional industries. Artisans and small business owners, who rely heavily on the production of textiles and crafts, fear significant financial losses and potential closures.
The proposed tax increase is a key agenda item at the 55th meeting of the GST Council, currently underway in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India.
