PDP’s Iltija Mufti Condemns Land Grab for Railway Project in IIOJK
December 5, 2024Iltija Mufti condemns the acquisition of fertile land for a railway project in IIOJK, warning of its impact on local livelihoods and ecology.
Iltija Mufti, leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly criticized the acquisition of fertile agricultural land in Bijbehara, located in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu And Kashmir’s (IIOJK) Islamabad district, for a proposed railway line project.
Speaking to the media in Srinagar, Iltija denounced the Modi government and the Lieutenant Governor (LG)-led administration for prioritizing infrastructure development over the livelihoods of local farmers. “Taking fertile agricultural lands for a railway project is a direct attack on the people’s means of survival,” she stated.
The railway project is set to affect a stretch of land passing through Pulwama, Bijbehara, and Awantipora. These areas are known for their fertile soil and orchards, which are essential to the local economy. Iltija emphasized that destroying such valuable land for the project was an unjust decision.
The PDP leader also raised concerns about the environmental impact of the railway project, urging authorities to consider alternative routes that would avoid agricultural land. “IIOJK’s fragile ecology is already under threat, and further damage due to such projects could exacerbate the situation,” she warned.
Iltija criticized the ongoing urban development in the region, including the construction of satellite towns without proper planning. She argued that such unplanned growth increases insecurity among the local population, particularly regarding land use and environmental sustainability.
The PDP leader also suggested that the project is part of a broader agenda driven by the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, which she believes is designed to undermine the region’s economy. “From firing government employees to seizing agricultural lands, the LG administration is criminalizing the livelihoods of Kashmiris,” Iltija remarked.
In light of these concerns, Iltija Mufti called for a reconsideration of the railway project. She urged authorities to prioritize public welfare and protect the agricultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir, which remains vital to the livelihood of countless families.
The PDP leader’s statements underscore the tension between development initiatives and the protection of local communities’ resources and environment. The situation reflects broader issues of governance, economic development, and environmental sustainability in IIOJK.
