IIOJK Assembly Speaker Stresses Impartiality in Special Status Resolution Process
November 12, 2024“The BJP presumed I would adjust the vote count, but I simply reported the facts,” he said.
Abdul Rahim Rather, Speaker of the Assembly in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), confirmed that the resolution seeking to restore the region’s special status has been officially forwarded for further consideration. Passed in the Assembly’s first session, this resolution aims to reestablish the autonomy IIOJK once held.
Speaking in Srinagar, Rather highlighted that his role as Speaker is strictly impartial, with his primary responsibility being to oversee and verify vote counts. “My duty was to tally the votes accurately and fairly,” he noted, emphasizing that he acted without political bias. When questioned about the resolution’s impact, Rather underscored that his duties are procedural, and discussions on the resolution’s implications should be directed to the political leaders involved.
The resolution received considerable support, with 62 votes in favor and 28 against. Rather countered any speculation of bias, remarking, “The BJP presumed I would adjust the vote count, but I simply reported the facts.” He clarified that his role as Speaker is non-political, focused on presiding over sessions and ensuring transparent processes.
Addressing the region’s law and order, Rather pointed out that these responsibilities fall under the jurisdiction of New Delhi rather than IIOJK’s political leadership. At a separate cultural event, Rather emphasized his commitment to preserving Kashmir’s cultural heritage, particularly the Kashmiri language, pledging support for initiatives that promote local arts and culture.
