New York: Pakistan’s acting ambassador to the United Nations, Usman Jadoon, has emphasized that achieving lasting global peace and stability hinges on recognizing the right to self-determination for territories under foreign occupation, particularly Kashmir and Palestine. His comments were made during a meeting with a 23-member delegation from the U.S. War College at Pakistan’s Mission to the UN.

Ambassador Jadoon highlighted the significance of the Kashmir issue, stating that the United Nations Charter enshrines the right to self-determination as a fundamental principle. He pointed out that addressing the Kashmir conflict is rooted in the UN Security Council’s foundational elements, noting that Security Council resolutions call for a UN-supervised plebiscite to allow the Kashmiri people to determine their future. Jadoon asserted that this framework is vital for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing dispute.

Additionally, Jadoon addressed the topic of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reform, reiterating Pakistan’s opposition to granting permanent membership to any nation. He warned that such a move could exacerbate existing challenges within the Council. Instead, he advocated for an increase in non-permanent seats to enhance inclusivity and accountability.

The meeting concluded with a question-and-answer session in which the delegation explored various issues, including the Kashmir dispute, India-Pakistan relations, and ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Jadoon’s remarks underline Pakistan’s commitment to advocating for the rights of oppressed peoples and pushing for reforms within international governance structures. His emphasis on self-determination reflects a broader call for justice and equity in addressing global conflicts.
