Congress Leader Advocates for Immediate Restoration of Statehood in IIOJK

Congress leader P. Chidambaram has made it clear: the newly formed government in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) must prioritize the restoration of statehood. This demand should unite all INDIA bloc parties.

His comments follow the recent electoral victory of the National Conference-Congress alliance in the assembly elections. Chidambaram expressed deep concern that the Lieutenant Governor has usurped powers that dismiss the people’s mandate just before the new government assumes office.

He insists that if the Modi government refuses to restore statehood, legal action must be considered. This is a crucial moment, especially after the revocation of President’s Rule in Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah is poised to take the oath as Chief Minister on October 16.

However, the people of IIOJK remain resolute in their quest for self-determination. This right has been pledged by the United Nations and overshadows all other demands, including statehood and the revival of Articles 370 and 35-A. Their unwavering focus on self-determination reflects the territory’s complicated history, particularly since India stripped Kashmir of its special status in 2019.

Kashmiris have endured decades of human rights violations, military sieges, and extreme restrictions on their freedoms. These harsh realities only fuel their determination to reclaim their right to self-determination. The Indian government’s actions, especially the repeal of Article 370, are viewed as blatant attempts to alter the region’s demographic landscape. This threatens the Kashmiri people’s cultural identity and majority status.

In this dismal context, the call for self-determination exceeds mere political party lines. Kashmiris assert their inalienable right to decide their future, a principle enshrined in UN resolutions. They demand respect and recognition, rather than hollow promises from political leaders.

Chidambaram’s focus on statehood restoration, while important, risks overshadowing the deeper struggle for autonomy and recognition. The Kashmiris’ voices must not be drowned out by political maneuvering. Their demands are deep-rooted in historical injustices that cannot be ignored.

As the new government prepares to take office, it must recognize that the aspirations of the Kashmiri people extend far beyond statehood. The international community must pay attention to these grievances, as the stakes are incredibly high.

Ignoring the quest for self-determination will only perpetuate the cycle of violence and oppression. The time has come for genuine dialogue that addresses the core issues at hand. The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve better than empty political gestures; they demand action and accountability.
